On Mother Earth Day, UN defends sustainable consumption actions

The 45th Earth Day was celebrated in late April. The date was created especially for thinking about the natural balance of our planet. At this edition, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon put out a message to for each one of us to be mindful regarding simple actions that can contribute to a more sustainable society.

Ban also referenced the meaning of “mother” in making a comparison to the Earth, observing how our planet has been able to support all of the diversity it possesses over so many years. And using this example, he says that we need to maintain sustainable actions to preserve the very delicate balance that exists in each of our ecosystems.

If you are still not quite sure where to start, there are opportunities everywhere. At home, put a lid on a pot of food to keep heat in, allowing you to finish cooking faster. The refrigerator is one of the biggest consumers of power, but this can be changed: take out everything you are going to use all at once to prevent having to open and close the door many times. When washing close, take advantage of the time and energy by filling the machine to wash everything at the same time.

“As a global community, we have the opportunity to make 2015 a turning point in human history,” stated Ban Ki-moon. Did these ideas help you think of more actions? Then all you need to do now is put them all in practice to help the planet. In the words of Ban Ki-Moon, “Change begins with us.”
